The space and imagery in Christian Nguyen’s paintings are inspired by mosaic and tile patterns. The vast repertoire of patterns is rooted in the grid and unit systems that are intrinsic to much of the world’s architectural traditions. Architectural concepts such as stacking and balancing, open and restricted spaces are integrated with graphic imagery to build his Nguyen’s complex paintings.
Christian Nguyen was born in Saigon, Vietnam, 1968. He received Bachelors in Fine Arts from The Cooper Union School of Art in 1990 and a Masters of Fine Arts at The Graduate Program, Hunter College in 2000. He currently lives and works New York City.
Nguyen has had artist residencies in the Maria Walsh Sharpe Space Program (2004) and the World Views Residency Program (2000) at the World Trade Center. He was awarded the Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant (2004) and the Emerging Artists Fellowship Grant (2004) from Socrates Sculpture Park.
